Muckross Abbey
Muckross-Abbey, Henry Campbell (1757-1828).
Muckross Abbey
Muckross Abbey is believed to have been founded as a Franciscan friary by Donal McCarthy Mór in 1448. This may have been a re-foundation, as the 17th-century Annals of the Four Masters records that the friary was established almost a century earlier, in 1340. Muckross Abbey experienced a turbulent history and became part of the Muckross Estate during the 18th century. A limited number of burials, for those individuals with family grave plots on-site, still take place.
